ChemOrbis Gaziantep 3rd Petrochemicals Summit was held on April 5, 2018 in Gaziantep Divan Hotel, with the valuable participation of key executives in global petrochemical and polymer markets. In addition to several presentations from players across the sector, the conference provided networking opportunities to the attendees with coffee breaks, an open buffet lunch and a cocktail.

The conference opened with a presentation entitled “Macroeconomic Risks and Rewards Ahead” by Mrs. Ozlem Derici Sengul, co-founder of SPINN Training & Consulting. Mrs. Sengul started her speech by analyzing the political and economic outlook across the board that will play a significant role in global growth this and next year. Later on, she focused on Turkey’s position in the global economy.

The next presentation came from Mr. Barbaros Demirci, Plastics Market Assessments Consultant to PAGEV, who focused on the current situation in the Turkish plastics industry during his presentation. Mr. Demirci analyzed the key trends affecting Turkey’s end-product market on a global scale, sharing some valuable data with the attendees. “Following China, Germany, the US and Italy; Turkey ranks the fifth with a share of 3.6% in the list of plastic raw material importers across the globe. As for the list of exports, the country ranks the 38th,” he highlighted. Later on, Demirci talked about opportunities and challenges that will shape the investment environment in Turkey’s plastics industry over the long term.

Following the lunch break, Mr. Stewart Hardy, Senior Consultant at NEXANT UK, gave a presentation entitled “Development of Polymers Market: Polyolefins and Beyond”. Mr. Hardy talked about the prevailing dynamics in the global PP and PE markets during his presentation, focusing on the impacts of interpolymer competition.

Mr. Dmitry Shastin from SIBUR gave the next presentation entitled, “Producer’s Perspective: Growth Drivers at Polyolefins World Landscape”. During his speech, Mr. Shastin focused on the global PP and PE markets by highlighting the key drivers of growth. “The global PE market is changing dramatically in response to the advancing industrialization of the emerging markets while PP continues to be very dynamic, led by strong demand growth in Asia, most notably from Northeast Asia and the India Subcontinent, which together are expected to account for 54% of global demand by 2021,” he noted.

The final session of the conference opened with a presentation on Iran’s petrochemical industry from Mohamad Heidari Rad, Head of Sales & Marketing TOPCO. Mr. Rad started his speech with a descriptive overview on the current situation of Iran’s petrochemical market. He shared updates on the ongoing and upcoming petrochemical projects in Iran. 

The Summit was ended by the presentation titled, "Creating Sustainable Value in Rigid Plastic Packaging" by Mr. Kurt Kuruc, Managing Director of Pentaplast Klockner, Turkey. Kuruc underlined the importance of creating new designs for packaging by using technology in order to prevent wastage while he gave some innovative examples of packing designs during his speech.
