September ABS dealt higher in Europe, increases vary in size

Petrotahlil - In Europe, ABS prices saw varying amounts of increases for September despite lower styrene settlement. Suppliers achieved increases for another month due to a combination of higher butadiene settlement, a lack of Asian imports and maintenance shutdowns. The fact that ABS performs better than PS also added to the sellers’ firmer pricing policies.

Trinseo announced increases of €35/ton, while the majority of suppliers achieved increases between €20/ton to €50/ton depending on the starting level. Meanwhile, a few producers reportedly achieved up to 3-digit hikes due to their short availability.

Buyers confirmed that they are facing difficulty to find material easily due to a lack of imports and a regional shutdown. The lack of competitive Asian imports supported European suppliers as they reported receiving increased inquiries from their irregular customers.

On the demand front, the recovery in the home appliances sector accelerated amid stock replenishment activities. A source from a major market participant said, “Large converters in the white goods sector placed a good number of orders ahead of their high season. Demand for small home appliances also performs well. Automotive sector lagged behind other segments in terms of recovery, meanwhile.”
