Repsol, Acteco reinforce commitment to circular economy with new recycling project
Petrotahlil - Spanish petrochemical company Repsol and plastics recycler Acteco are once again joining forces, this time on the development of a project to increase the capacity of a recycled materials production plant Acteco owns in Alicante, Spain.
The two companies have been collaborating since 2018, aiming to decrease waste and the volume of plastics going to landfill by promoting the recovery of polymers and their re-introduction into sectors such as automotive, healthcare, construction or packaging, Repsol said.
This new agreement reinforces the partnership and consolidates the commitment of both companies to the recycling of high-quality polyethylene and polypropylene from domestic and industrial plastic waste.
It also allows Repsol to benefit from Acteco’s over 25 years of experience in collecting, processing, and mechanical recycling of plastics.
Additionally, it will provide a solution for the large number of plastic products that currently cannot be recycled, said Jorge Ramis, Managing Director of Acteco.
The recycled resins produced at the Alicante plant will be incorporated into Repsol’s Reciclex range, a Reciclexportfolio of products containing mechanically recycled materials designed for high-value applications. As a result, Repsol will be able to offer its customers a complete range of high-quality circular polyolefins ‘that will allow them to increase the amount of recycled materials in their products’, said José Luis Bernal, Executive Director of Repsol Chemicals.
The partnership, or strategic alliance as Bernal describes it, is part of the circular economy initiatives Repsol has launched to achieve its carbon intensity reduction goals and will help the company to achieve its objective of becoming a net zero emissions company by 2050.
In 2019, Repsol was the first company in its sector to set this ambitious goal. In line with this goal, a further ambition is to recycle the equivalent of 20% of its polyolefin production by 2030.
The company currently runs more than 200 circular economy projects which it is implementing in collaboration with over 180 strategic partner companies, organisations and institutions. Through these alliances, synergies are created to accelerate the implementation of circular solutions.
