Petrotahlil :US chemicals firm Vertellus presented its portfolio of adhesives and polyurethane (PU) sealants systems for increasingly harsh environments during the K 2019 plastic trade fair in Düsseldorf in October.

Amongst the products on display were the company’s Polycin polyols, Vorite prepolymers and Sealrite gels, which Vertellus said help a wide variety of device manufacturers maintain product integrity for applications ranging from electrical wire and cable and components, to highly specialised medical devices.

In addition, Vertellus highlighted its D-Encapsulant, a two-component polyurethane (PU) sealant system that features a low viscosity and extended pot life to form an effective water block, with high flexibility and electrical and long-term stability properties.

The product has been designed for deep-sea fibre optic data transmission lines, which are increasingly in demand by the telecommunications industry.

The PU systems are hydrophobic, which keeps moisture from penetrating the sensitive electrical and fibre optic system - a critical feature in a high water/high pressure environment.

The system also shows low stress under a wide temperature range, helping maintain physical properties between -50oC and 100oC and ensuring the longevity of the cable assembly in deep sea use.

As temperatures change, the sealant will not swell, protecting the internal components from the time of manufacture at ambient temperature through to installation in frigid ocean waters, Vertellus noted.

The company went on to add that its sealants and adhesives are good insulators, helping to maintain electrical signal strength along the length of the transmission line.
